]]> Editing video footage from a DSLR HD camera with Adobe Premiere versions like CS4 and smaller was definitely a pain. Incredible slow when working with the native material, incredible complicated when working with proxy files etc.

Now with Adobe Premiere CS5 editing DSRL HD footage is working more smooth. Jason Levine shows how footage from different cameras with different resolutions and frame rates can be edited now. Sure a 64-bit machine with sufficient RAM and CPU power helps.

]]> Adobe has released a nice and free photo editing application for your iPhone called “Photoshop.com Mobile“. You can take, select, edit and upload photos to some Photoshop page. It comes with the following editing functions:

  • Crop, rotate, flip
  • Exposure, saturation, tint, black & white
  • Sketch, soft focus
  • Vibrant, pop, border, vignette blur, warm vintage, rainbow, white glow, soft black and white

Nice app if you like taking photos with your iPhone.

]]> You have purchased a new camera and the RAW or NEF pictures are not opened in Adobe Photoshop or Bridge CS4?

This is the case when you have e.g. a Canon 5D Mark II or Nikon D3S. What helps is a upgrade of Adobe Camera Raw. This can be done either manual using the download from Adobe or using the upgrade function in Photoshop (Help->Upgrades).

The update from Photoshop version 11.0 to 11.0.1 should also be done, a few stability issues should be fixed.

CS3 users will have a problem because Adobe Camera Raw is no longer developed for CS3. If you really want to use RAW/NEF then a upgrade to CS4 seems to be needed.

]]> It may happen that the workspace of Adobe bridge gets damaged. In such a case thumbnails on the right corner of the Bridge window will be cut and the preview/metadata etc. windows will no longer be displayed. I’m not sure if this was caused by Bridge, Windows 7 or by myself. Also restarting bridge doesn’t help.

bridge_workspace What helps is to reset the workspace. This function is hidden behind a small black triangle on the upper right side of the Bridge window. After clicking “Reset workspace” everything gets fine (see picture).

Don’t ask  how long it took until I found this small triangle…

]]> The bigger CF cards and mega pixels of digital photo cameras get, the more you want to have the pictures copied to your notebook/desktop, for sure. After I got my Canon 5D MKII with 21 mega-pixels I really want to have the speed increased it takes to copy pictures to my notebook. With my very old card reader it takes about half an our to copy. Ok, firewire sounds really fast and my notebook has a firewire port, so I decided to get a firewire CF card reader…

So I went to a local photo store and purchased a Hama firewire CF card reader. Back at home I recognized that the firewire cable doesn’t fit into the firewire port of my Dell Latitude notebook. Went to a PC cable store and got a cable from firewire 400 to firewire 800. Fine, everything fits now put Windows 7 did not detect anything on the firewire port.

After searching the Internet I found out that firewire CF card readers need at least 6-pin firewire ports because they need the power supply from the firewire port. If you have a 4 pin port – like me – you can not use firewire CF card readers. Unfortunately I did not get this information from my friendly photo store…

Furthermore firewire doesn’t make sense until you have firewire 800. Theoretically there is no speed between firewire 400 and USB2.0.

As a result I’ll by a new USB2.0 CF card reader for my notebook.

]]> There is a new iPhone application called “Best Camera” available. It allows shooting pictutres, putting several filters/effects on pictures and uploading them quickly to online communities like Facebook, Twitter or sending via e-Mail.

It also allows sending pictures to the new online community thebestcamera.com. I think the app only makes sense with the iPhone 3GS, it seems that the camera of the 3Gs is better than the one of my 3G. At least it has a auto focus now… The tool is explained in this video:

For some reason Bridge uses thumbnails to display the photo in full screen which will result in a blurred display.

To avoid this enter the menu “Edit->Presets->Extended” (I guess this is the name of the menu, I only have the German version of Bridge here) and
activate the option [x] Generate preview in monitor size (see picture below of the German version).

Afterwards you will have to clear your disk cache (Edit->Presets->Cache), otherwise for already generated thumbnails you will not notice a difference.
